The OpenADR Alliance today announced that Siemens, a global leader in electrical engineering and electronics, has become a Sponsor Member of the OpenADR Alliance. As a Sponsor Member, Siemens joins the Board of Directors comprised of Southern California Edison, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), AutoGrid, EnerNOC and Honeywell.
EnerNOC, Inc. (Nasdaq:ENOC), a leading provider of energy intelligence software, today announced that its technology has been certified by the OpenADR Alliance for compliance with the OpenADR 2.0 Profile B specification. Profile B is designed for high-end embedded devices that support a wide range of demand response services and markets, and this certification confirms EnerNOC's ability to seamlessly integrate with demand response programs in new and existing markets that require standards compliance. EnerNOC is one of the first companies in the OpenADR Alliance to announce a 2.0B-compliant product.
It seems like every big smart grid and building energy management vendor is rolling out its own version of equipment to support OpenADR, the technology emerging as a standard for automating the interplay of grid and utility commands with building energy controls. The list includes Honeywell and Akuacom, Alstom and UISOL, Schneider Electric and IPKeys, EnerNOC, Comverge, Cisco, Hitachi, Toshiba, and a long list of other OpenADR Alliance members.
The OpenADR Alliance today announced the first OpenADR 2.0b-certified devices from a number of member companies, including: AutoGrid, EnerNOC, Fujitsu, Honeywell and IPKeys Technologies. The OpenADR 2.0b Profile Specification released in July of this year, is a full-feature specification for complex energy management solutions supporting automated demand response (ADR) and distributed energy resource (DER) management for both wholesale and retail programs. ADR programs enable customers to reduce their energy usage during times of peak demand, high wholesale market prices or grid stress.
Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Laboratories Limited, and Fujitsu Laboratories of America, Inc. today announced that the Demand Response (DR) client (VEN: Virtual End Node) software they developed is one of the first in the world to receive certification of compliance with OpenADR 2.0b, the latest DR standard, which was released in July 2013.

The Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) Smart Grid standard enables compliance with the new Title 24 California Energy Code, in effect Jan. 1, 2014. Since OpenADR is being designed into most building management and lighting control systems, California business owners and operators can more easily comply with the changes to Title 24, originally adopted in 1978 to regulate California’s energy crisis by requiring any construction of a new building, or alterations made to an existing building, to meet certain standards. The new code includes more stringent regulations for demand response (DR) capabilities within lighting and HVAC in both residential and non-residential buildings, enabling better management of peak energy demand, costs and overall energy usage.

MINNEAPOLIS, March 26, 2014 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced a two- year program with CPS Energy in San Antonio, Texas. The utility will use automated demand response (ADR) technology and services from Honeywell to connect and collaborate with commercial and industrial customers, and adjust electricity consumption when the demand for energy peaks. As a result, CPS Energy will have additional tools to enhance the stability of the Texas electrical grid, especially on hot summer days when air conditioners and other cooling equipment are often running at capacity.
The program is expected to be the largest ADR deployment by a municipal utility, and will build on a successful pilot project that CPS Energy and Honeywell completed last year. The pilot included nine commercial and industrial facilities, and helped trim demand by approximately 1.5 megawatts (MW) — a more than 10 percent reduction in each building on average. Honeywell and CPS Energy will look toenroll 60 additional sites, bringing the potential reduction to nearly 6 MW, enough electricity to meet the typical load of more than 2,200 homes. In February, Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) achieved another milestone toward becoming an international standard when theInternational Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), a renowned standards development organization, released a profile of OpenADR 2.0 as a Publicly Available Specification (PAS). This action recognizes OpenADR as a standard that will enable our electricity systems to be more responsive and smarter about operating under numerous economic, environmental, and security restraints. OpenADR 2.0 is already a national standard in the United States, as the result of Smart Grid standards interoperability activities coordinated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP).

Comverge, OpenADR Alliance make inroads.
Although there has been a lot of technology investment in the country, it is unclear where, how and when demand response will play out in Japan. When Comverge looked at the Japanese market, an R&D facility seemed like the most appropriate way to answer some of those questions, and the firm may be well positioned to leverage an early-mover advantage.
