OpenADR Alliance in Action
Summer is almost upon us again and automated demand response is becoming more of an all seasons approach to energy and economic savings. For commercial, industrial and residential properties, Enerliance recently shared demand response is “good for people, businesses, and the environment, and will unlock a future that relies on intelligent, resilient, and clean energy solutions.”
Given the need to communicate the clear benefits of automated demand response, it is fitting that CPS Energy was awarded a “Griddie” for Excellence in Communications by the Association for Demand Response and Smart Grid. Another award winning member to note is Comverge, which earned Smart Grid Product of the Year via TMCnet.
Please be sure to view the following link to the OpenADR Project Map hosted by LBNL: http://drrc.lbl.gov/openadr/map/list. We are seeking information from our members to populate the map with OpenADR programs and pilots. Please contact [email protected] if you have data to share.

OpenADR Alliance in Action
The timing has never been better for this dynamic open standard to take off. This Earth Month, our sponsor, IPKeys and member, Candi Controls, announced a partnership to bring “Smart Grid Benefits to the Internet of Things.” By reducing energy consumption and costs, these OpenADR Alliance members are achieving environmental facing goals in a meaningful way.
Honeywell And CPS Energy recently announced efforts to help make the electrical grid smarter and more reliable. The two-year program is expected to be the largest ADR deployment by a municipal utility, and will build on a successful pilot project that CPS Energy and Honeywell completed last year.

PLMA in Denver was filled with insight into the state of the industry and it was apparent that interest in OpenADR continues to mount. As states and countries begin to work toward their individual environmental goals, OpenADR will play a key role. OpenADR 2.0 Enters the SGIP Catalog of Standards
The OpenADR 2.0 'a' and 'b' Profile Specifications were approved by the members of SGIP to enter the Catalog of Standards (CoS). The CoS is a compendium of standards, practices, guidelines and other technical documents considered relevant for the development and deployment of a robust and interoperable Smart Grid. Many in the energy industry refer to standards in the CoS for implementation because of the rigorous, multi-part review performed by industry experts in the SGIP process.

DistribuTECH Highlights
The OpenADR Alliance had a strong showing at the DistribuTECH Conference in San Antonio with 23 members exhibiting. There were several meetings with the press and analyst in attendance and several people interested in learning more about the Alliance. Here is an article as a result of a press meeting with editor Katherine Tweed from GreenTech Media: The Demand Response Industry Simplifies Communication Protocol OpenADR.
Here’s a clip from the Bring Your Own Thermostat Panel at DistribuTech. In the breakout education sessions, it was clear that there was a good mix of organizations utilizing OpenADR, those with knowledge of the standard, and organizations which are tremendously curious. When asked about the standard in practice, panelist Lupe Jimenez, Senior Project Manager of Smart Grid R&D at SMUD said, “OpenADR just offers many more opportunities.”
