OpenADR Alliance, USEF Foundation Partnership takes first step to standardize flexibility programs

Updated OpenADR Demand Response Program Guide to Include New Program Templates for Europe

MORGAN HILL, Calif., OCT. 12, 2016: The year-long collaboration between the OpenADR Alliance and USEF (Universal Smart Energy Framework) Foundation has already resulted in the creation of several new Demand Response (DR) Program Templates in the OpenADR Program Guide. This initial success aligns with the key goals of the relationship, which began in November 2015 to accelerate the development of an integrated smart energy future that is energy efficient, cost-effective and beneficial for businesses and consumers alike.

OpenADR is an open and standardized way for electricity providers and system operators to communicate DR signals with each other and with their customers, using a common language. USEF delivers the integrated market structure, the tools and rules for commoditization and trading of flexible energy use, as well as a universal framework to accommodate and monetize DR. The organizations developed and added a USEF deployment scenario and three new Demand Response (DR) program templates (Incentive-based program, Transaction-based program, and Override program), all helping to standardize the use of OpenADR in specific commonly used DR programs within the USEF framework.

“The implementation of these DR Program templates is further proof of the synergistic relationship of our two organizations,” said Rolf Bienert, technical director of the OpenADR Alliance.  “OpenADR benefits from USEF’s front-running position in Europe and existing alignment with European initiatives, and USEF benefits from the many different equipment manufacturers that have already adopted OpenADR as well as the practical experience we have with U.S. DR programs.”

By bridging the gaps between standards, USEF and OpenADR make smarter and more connected infrastructures a reality and projects, products and services will be more rapidly connectable.” said Peter van den Heede, a board member of USEF who is also the head of sales council and business development for ABB.

About the OpenADR Alliance

The OpenADR Alliance fosters the development, adoption, and compliance of the Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) standard through collaboration, education, training, testing, and certification. The OpenADR Alliance is open to all interested stakeholders interested in accelerating the adoption of the OpenADR standard for price- and reliability-based demand response and to help manage distributed energy resources (DER) in the electrical grid. More information can be obtained at http://www.openadr.org/.

About USEF

The Universal Smart Energy Framework (USEF) is a market design for the exchange and settlement of flexible energy use. Its market structure, roles and rules have been developed to accelerate the commercial deployment of smart energy systems.

Seven key players active across the smart energy chain founded USEF to accelerate the transition to a unified viable smart energy system. USEF partners work together to effectively address the challenges of one integrated system, which benefits new and traditional energy companies as well as consumers.
